Feedback!

I need some feedback today so please comment.
I'm thinking about self publishing a photography book for about 25.00. Basically, I'm thinking that quite a bit of people love the arts but most of the time their pocketbooks, can't handle purchasing original art. People would be able to purchase the book online and it would mostly consist of my landscapes and Urban work. I have new stuff but I'm not posting it online so that some unseen stuff would be in there. Jaelphotography.carbonmade.com/
That's it, I'm just wondering if there would be interest. Now it's your turn, Comment away. Be honest, you think no way then say it! xox
Until next time, this is one n'd Jen signing off!

  1. Can you elaborate a bit more..would this be a coffee table style book, or a down-loadable selection of images. Also, when would you have it ready to offer? If you've been working on this for awhile, will it be ready to go before the Holidays, or will you have a few months to start trying to generate some word of mouth via twitter, blog, facebook, etc?
It really sounds interesting, and since I've poked around on your site,I can honestly say you have real talent(I esp love-#3 of 5-the ramshackle house in the field)and with a good price, you may really find your self a niche, esp with a limited number of copies and perhaps offering signed copies.
Anyhoo..anxious to hear more details :)

  2. thanks firelass. It would be a coffee table book with perhaps a screensaver for the first 100 copies or so. I think that it would be a good idea to have it available before christmas/hanukkah. If I did I guess I would just power twitter, Fb lol to generate PR. I honestly never thought of the signed copies! Thanks for the feedback.

  3. I honestly don't know how to offer assistance because I don't have any knowledge of cost vs avail. funds. but i also would expect that publishers want something unique/ an angle that has not been done before....You are very talented and I'd spend some time developing portfolios of photos that would hold together as if they were presented to a publisher or 2 for this very concept. This is a wonderful avenue for any artist of any medium and may yield this proposed thought or take you in other directions.----- What could hold attention for a whole book of photos. What would interest you and sell the publisher. That is the ? Wondering about a reenactment of a children's classic story,or the tragic life of a groupie, ummmmm, or dichotomies, one image successfully balanced with its extreme opposite....anyway thanks for asking and hopefully something I said will help you:)

  4. Bonjour!

I think your project is a great idea! I agree with the suggestion about printing a limited number of signed copies, which will make your book even more unique and sought after. You should definitely also develop an ‘exhibit’ at the same time as the same photos so you can promote your work that you will be selling in the form of a book.

You could also add a few local shots and then tie your project to a local issue or group or association related to your photographs. That is, if most of your photographs will be about urban dwellings or landscapes, locally, your book could be promoted, sold, auctioned off at one of the association’s events (for example, “Association du patrimoine d’Aylmer”, etc, or equivalent, elsewhere, etc).

Or, you could then promote it via businesses that are in areas that represent the areas you captured on film (ex. businesses in old Hull, maybe do a mini talk about your work at “Le Troquet” – they host many local speakers/events/exhibits – exhibit your work on their walls and have your book available for sale, there).

Or, what about a tie in to “Habitat for humanity” – for every # sold, you give them a %, and they promote your book by having it at their charity events? Or, see about offering an exhibit and book sale at the next ‘Home Show’? Or, maybe a tie to a ‘real estate convention’ (the realtor’s might be interested!) or local events for either realtors or those interested in a certain style of home (ex. You could showcase the Glebe and sell your book in one of their retro cafés or art stores)?
It really depends on who (the profile of buyer) you are trying to reach, the theme of your photographs , and /or the point of view you want to express/present to potential admirers of your work. You may also want to give some thought to when the optimal time of year is, to reach this type of person. It doesn't have to be Christmas if it doesn't match your theme. For instance, it could also be “spring” when everyone starts to think of wanting to upgrade their home for another, and starts looking at ‘for sale’ signs… Just think, you could make it into a cool ‘event’, next spring!

  5. I'm going to look into both publishers and self publishing and see what is the best bet. The thing is with self publishing, although there is an initial cost, it gives more reign to have say limited editions etc. I like the habitat for humanity idea but I am also keeping into consideration the heart and stroke foundation.
I think I'm going to call Le troquet today and see if they want to display some of my work, I love that place.
Thanks so much for the feedback and if you have more to add please do.
